Echo
In the everyday, I find the things that grow still, the things that vanish, and the things that carry on… Sometimes, something belongs to all three. Through the co-existence of contradictions, opposites also merge. In this way, grief draws closer to comfort, until they blur into one another.
In painting, I carve out space for such a paradox.
Painting is daydreaming with your nose pressed against reality.
It is a form of treasuring. Giving loving attention to the things surrounding us. I explore meaning in the everyday by connecting traditional symbolism to the contemporary still life. Which things tell us something about the value of the contemporary? I wonder how far the everyday actually extends, and how universal it is.
Only we can abandon the sea.
The sea cannot.
Rather than diving into a painting, I believe the artwork expands, claims a room, and hushes its intentions into the space.
When painting, I revisit a specific moment with the same feeling. Feelings exist in the echo of something that has happened. The layered method of oil painting aligns with this idea of living in the echo of moments.

Echo
